updated July 2021 added ticket
Audio - poor
Sound 2 - 57min - unknown source/generation - 18 tracks
White Man in Hammersmith Palais
Quality
little range of sound being someway off the master
The end of the main part of the Out of Control Tour, an exhausting 22 gigs in 25 days but the band still put in an excellent performance. Sadly this recording cannot do the gig justice; there’s little range of sound being someway off the master. Its not a terrible recording by any means and significantly better than Manchester Apollo from this tour.
Bass unusually comes through the best, and then vocals with drums and guitar buried somewhat in the mix. There is little distortion but lack of treble makes for a dull and muddy sound. Lower generation recording required.
POSTER
Southampton Top Rank
The Top Rank Suite, a popular venue for music and social events during the 1960s and 1970s, was located at Banister Park, on the site of the old Stadium 2 and known for its revolving stage and a variety of acts that performed there over the years. It opened its doors in the mid-1960s and was an entirely new concept for the city, combining a nightclub, dance hall, and disco under one roof.
The venue was later known as The Mayfair towards the end of its life 2 3. Unfortunately, the building was demolished nearly 20 years before the Daily Echo article from 2008, which reminisces about the venue 2.
There are a number of highlights: Clash City Rockers now the finished article, Jail Guitar Doors in these early performances is best, White Man still with “millions of yen down Japan way”. The Prisoner gets a reference to one of its inspirations “This is Southampton right, do you get The Prisoner on TV?”
There is an edit which loses the opening chords of I’m So Bored With The USA and a lengthy delay for bass repairs before Police & Thieves with Joe telling the audience “now’s the time to swop the latest punk gossip to the person on your right” and telling the old Johnny Rotten durex joke.
An excellent City of the Dead gets an intro of “this is about being dead from the neck up”. The band play one encore of Cheat, which blasts straight into a manic White Riot.

I was there
I remember Penetration - I don't clearly recall The Lou's (whoever they were), though it rings a bell somewhere. I remember Pauline Murray wearing that famous cowboys T-shirt.
Do you know anything about this gig?
All help appreciated. Info, articles, reviews, comments or photos welcome.
