Rock'n'Roll Redux –––– Photo of Joe Strummer, frontman of pub rock band 'The 101ers' with bassist Dan Kelleher, taken by Joe Stevens onstage at The Nashville Rooms in West Kensington, London on 23rd April, 1976.
The recently formed Sex Pistols had also played earlier that night as support openers for 'The 101ers.' This became the infamous night where Malcolm McLaren & Vivienne Westwood instigated a fight with audience members which brought the fledgling Pistols the publicity they needed, a front page of Melody Maker and cover story as I recall. Seeing their performance was a life-changing experience for Joe and in one moment he realized he was looking at the future: "They were like a million years ahead,” he later told Chris Salewicz, his biographer. "I realised immediately we were going nowhere. The rest of my group hated them…”
William Sweeney –––– I saw the Clash early '79 at the Santa Monica Civic, with Bo Diddley and (I heard) the Dils opening. The Clash were great, and Bo was wonderful, with his home-made & very tweaked rectangular guitar. He flicked a few switches and pressed the foot pedal for a wide variety of effects, (including flashing his name on the guitar, over and over!) holding up his arm and bowing to applause. ––––
We came from San Diego on a bad traffic Friday with a five hour head start (for what is normally a 1 to 1.5 hour drive) and STILL missed our San Diego homeboys The Dils. Seen them many times, always great, but we were bummed about it...the traffic crawled, maxed at 20 mph...grrr...
