The Clash —
Aces & Eights

1978 is framed as The Clash’s most decisive year: the stormy On Parole UK tour, writing/recording of Give ’Em Enough Rope with producer Sandy Pearlman, and the first push toward the US. Sessions span Marquee Studios and Basing Street; Jamaica yields Safe European Home and Drug Stabbing Time. Flashpoints include the air-rifle “Guns on the Roof” incident and the Victoria Park anti-racism rally. Openers Suicide and The Coventry Automatics (later The Specials) shape the bill; set lists road-test Tommy Gun, English Civil War, and Stay Free. A sidebar Q&A, “Rude Boy Can’t Fail,” has Ray Gange recalling tour chaos, celebrity cameos, and label gatecrashing. — Stories & authors

– “Aces & Eights” — Kris Needs; “Rude Boy Can’t Fail” (Q&A) — Ray Gange interview feature within the same spread.

Victoria Park (Rock Against Racism/ANL, Hackney); Friars Aylesbury (Maxwell Hall); Dunstable Queensway Hall; Birmingham Barbarella’s; Manchester Elizabethan Ballroom (Belle Vue); Glasgow Apollo; Dunfermline Kinema; tour warm-up at Manticore, Fulham.

THE CHISWICK RECORDS STORY (1975-1983)

Ted Carroll and Roger Armstrong, Chiswick Records emerged from their Rock On record stalls in London to become a pivotal independent label bridging pub rock and punk.

Clash, a night as a busker

Antonio Bacciocchi recounts The Clash's final UK tour May 1985 — an unplanned, acoustic busking journey through English cities after the band's implosion post-Mick Jones' expulsion.

— Stripped of fame, Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, and new members played in squares, outside supermarkets, and pubs, surviving on coins for food and beer. Setlists mixed Clash classics like White Riot and I Fought the Law with rock'n'roll covers.

— Glasgow gig at Duke’s Bar (later documented in Joe Strummer Slept Here), a York church performance that turned into a 200-strong singalong, and a Leeds paint-protest by Chumbawamba's Danbert Nobacon.

— Cities played: Nottingham, Leeds, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow; rumored stops in Liverpool and Birmingham.

Strummer called it "the best tour we ever did" — a raw return to punk roots before the band's dissolution.
